Why You Should Consider Joining the Nature Club

Humans have endeavored to make their life better but that has happened at the cost of the well-being of other species, flora and fauna. Evidence is all around that children's educational experiences have failed to provide them with enough engagement with the natural world and the immediate environment. As a result, we don’t know the world around us enough, thus, kindling in us only a weak desire to protect it.

As part of the Nature Club, participants will learn about their relationship with their immediate environment and the world at large, through an intense outdoor engagement that requires all their senses and no screens or lenses 🙂 Nature Club's activities are designed after a study of the science and environmental science curriculum of various age groups and will be a more practical & reflective extension of the curricular topics covered in classrooms.

Introductory Course:

Understand Water as a natural resource & Biodiversity (butterflies, birds, spiders, leaves, flowers, fruits), in the context of our immediate environment of Greenwood Regency: Get your caps, put on your boots, grab your notepads and pencils and colors and sketch pens and join us in understanding the life-giving natural resource, water, in the global context and specifically in the context of GWR.

Some areas that will be covered: where does our water come from, how do we use it, why is water important, how do we waste it, how can we conserve it, what are the species in our backyard, how many trees and butterflies and spiders and flowers and leaves can we see around us? Participants will contribute to creating a biodiversity book for Greenwood Regency.

All materials and tools needed will be provided.

Why You Should Consider Joining the Book & Reading Club

Greenwood Learning Centre's Library is not just a collection of vibrant, diverse, age appropriate, good quality books but a space that is committed to nurturing ardent, discerning readers - readers who are expanding and enhancing their sensibilities, learning to read between the lines, picking up nuances and complexities, responding to issues relevant to them and perhaps, picking up the skill to also be critical of the content they are encountering!

In an age where there is often very little encouragement to read, too many other occupations, unmonitored television-viewing, addiction to computer games & mobile phones, and academic pressure, the imaginative flow of children is at a danger of drying up! At the GLC library, there are ways by which children's relationship to books and reading can be strengthened, in turn strengthening their imagination, curiosity and wonder.

Its many programs and activities, the GLC library will offer its readers, unhindered access to a curated collection of some of the best books and resources, including international and national award-winning titles, that have been written for children and young readers! This will be enhanced by planned and facilitated opportunities for meaningful engagement with the books, making the library a space for dialog and reflection for young readers. Thus, they'll find encouragement to move forward on their journey as readers, engaging with increasingly complex texts and themes.

Introductory Course:

Week 1: Exploring the library collection through games & activities, listening to a read aloud, every child to read 1 age appropriate book with guidance from library educator

Week 4: Read Aloud, children will write a letter to the author of one of the books they have read in the library, think of a title if they were to write a book, design the cover of that imaginary book.
